Resident Training and Rotations

Every year, 27 postgraduate residents join the Department of Radiology. The residency program is affiliated with the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI) and the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, both of which are premier institutes in their respective specialties.

As part of their academic curriculum and clinical training, residents undergo structured rotational postings at these affiliated institutes. This provides them with extensive hands-on exposure to advanced oncological and cardiological imaging, including modalities such as PET-CT, cardiac MRI, and advanced Doppler studies. Through these rotations, residents gain comprehensive experience in diagnosing and managing complex cancer and cardiovascular cases, significantly enhancing their diagnostic skills and clinical acumen.

Radiology Services During COVID-19 Pandemic and Post-COVID Care

The Department of Radiology at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad (CHA) played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, operating continuously on the frontlines to support patient diagnosis and management. The department ensured round-the-clock availability of chest X-ray and High-Resolution CT (HRCT) thorax imaging, which were pivotal in assessing the severity and progression of COVID-19 pneumonia, especially in moderate to severe cases.

Radiology teams worked tirelessly alongside clinicians in COVID-designated wards and ICUs, providing rapid imaging support for triaging, monitoring, and evaluating complications. Despite the overwhelming patient load, the department maintained high standards of imaging quality and infection control.

In the post-COVID phase, the department continued its dedicated service by supporting the diagnosis and management of mucormycosis (black fungus) — a serious fungal infection that emerged as a complication in immunocompromised COVID-19 patients. The radiology team provided timely and detailed CT and MRI imaging of the paranasal sinuses, orbits, and brain, essential for early detection, surgical planning, and monitoring disease progression.

This proactive involvement highlights the department’s commitment to public health and its ability to respond efficiently in times of medical crisis.
