The Department of community medicine at BJMC was established in 1958. The department is one of the members of National Public Health consortium under NIHFW as the apex body. It plays a key role in analyzing and solving Public Health problems along with regular involvement in all academic & administrative avenues of the college. The department serves as a nodal centre for field epidemiology training, offering programs for epidemiologists and district surveillance officers from Gujarat and other states. It also functions as a regional training centre for the Vector Borne Disease Control Program.

The Department has made notable contributions in studies with the ICMR and also involved in base line assessment of various diseases of public health importance and monitoring and evaluation of National Health Programs. As a part of Rapid Response Team conducts epidemic investigation whenever required. Faculties are actively involved in various capacity building initiatives, monitoring and programme evaluation and in the Causal association of AEFI. The department supported the SHSRC in preparing the district health index. Various State and National research projects have also been undertaken by the department. Currently, the department in collaboration with Microbiological department works in zoonotic surveillance under NOHP-PCZ.
